Introduction:
The purpose of this page is to share as much information as possible about the types of Diabetes on children and adults. Diabetes is a common illness and once you are diagnosed with it, it’s a life long chronic disease.
Diabetes affects more that 23 million people in theUnited States alone. And more that 57 million over age 20 are diagnose with Pre-diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance; which means that their blood sugar levels are high but not enough to be consider diabetes, being the most common disorder of the endocrine (hormone) system. Diabetes is caused either by one or two factors. It can be caused by either the too little insulin or resistance to insulin.
Insulin: is created by the pancreas, and it’s located behind the liver. When used as medication is derived from either pork or beef (no longer available in the U.S) and it is also made genetically identical to human insulin.
Who can use insulin? People with type 1, type 2 and women with gestational diabetes.
Types of insulin:
Rapid acting insulin that works in minutes and last a couple of hours.
Regular or short acting, takes 30 minutes to work and last 3 to 6 hours.
Intermediate acting insulin and takes 2 to 4 hours to work, and it can last up to 18 hours.
Long acting insulin takes 6 to 10 hours to reach the bloodstream and works for an entire day.
